Ilse Koop, “Homo aqua”, 2021, mixed media.

Here in the Netherlands we live below sea level. With the sea level rising, there is a chance the Netherlands will get flooded in the future. When everything is under water, how will humanity survive? Is the human body going to adapt to this situation? Are we going to be able to live in water?

These are questions that I am currently exploring. I am looking at the qualities that the human body currently possesses when it is in contact with water and research the possibilities that they bring. The wrinkles we get when we are in the water for a longer time gives us grip. And in the embryonic phase we exhibit gill slits. I want to explore these abilities and expand them and mould them together into the design of a transhuman: The Homo Aqua.
