Lourens Stuurman, “Untitled”, 2020, acrylics on paper, 220 x 150 cm.

A couple of months ago I discovered an interesting artist called Tjebbe Beekman. I was working on paintings with buildings, and old strange photographs as my main subject, and he made similar work. This work initially started out as a study, as I wanted to figure out how Beekman made his version. But then close to the end I changed some colours and shapes, making it less busy. To me it looked too out of balance. Like this the painting felt more my own.

With this work I want the viewer to get lost in the painting. I want them to feel like they are looking into another world. A window frame looking out, or a portal to an outer world. Getting overwhelmed and not being able to look away. And I think I accomplished this.
